Our Programs

High School

Our High School program supports students from Years 7 to 12 in developing independence, critical thinking, and a strong sense of self. In Years 7–10, students engage with the NESA curriculum through a Montessori lens, with access to a broad range of electives. In Years 11 and 12, students continue their journey through the globally recognised International Baccalaureate. Across all stages, we nurture confident, capable learners prepared for life beyond school.

About the Program

High School program offers a unique, student-centred education that builds on the strong foundations laid in the earlier years. Our Adolescent Program, established over 25 years ago, provides a nurturing and academically engaging environment for students in Years 7 to 10 (Stages 4 and 5).

As a Registered and Accredited school with NESA, we deliver all mandatory subjects and a wide range of electives in Stage 5, supporting students to explore their interests and develop essential skills. All subjects are delivered in two-year learning cycles, with the exception of Mathematics, which is tailored to individual progression.

The high school years at Elonera are designed to foster independence, critical thinking, and a strong sense of self, preparing students not only for their senior years but for life beyond school.

Our program naturally transitions into Stage 6, where students can pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) — a globally recognised qualification that complements the Montessori philosophy and supports well-rounded, future-ready learners.

Program Aims

Our Adolescent Program is designed to support students in becoming capable, compassionate, and engaged young adults. Through a carefully prepared environment and meaningful learning experiences, students are empowered to:

transform themselves into independent, self-regulating, resourceful and adaptable adults

through our work and our Be Prepared to Think program, become interested observers, listeners and collaborators, critical thinkers and engaged citizens

express their own opinions, develop their own talents, make decisions and solve problems, on their own or collaboratively, with a confidence that is grounded in the practical, social and intellectual knowledge, skills and values they are developing in the Montessori environment

contribute productively, with enthusiasm and integrity, to family, school and community life, and to the wider society, both national and global

dedicate themselves to the future of humanity

Occupations

Students in Stage 4 and Stage 5 take part in a weekly Occupations class, running on Wednesdays in Period 2 – Period 5. Students can pick which Occupations class they wish to be in each term. They will take part in practical work in their designated class to extend into the manual work inspired by Maria Montessori.

“Education should include two forms of work, manual and intellectual, for the same person, and thus make it understood by practical experience that these two kinds complete each other and are equally essential to a civilized existence.”

- Maria Montessori’s ‘From Childhood to Adolescence’, p.65

Stage 5 Electives

In Stage 5, students continue to build upon their stage 4 learning in the core subject areas (Mathematics, English, Science, HSIE, PDHPE) in addition to two chosen electives.

The elective options offered are reflective of the preferences of the students and the skills of our teachers. In 2025 the offered electives are:

  • Commerce (New in 2025!)

  • Visual Arts

  • Photography and Digital Media

  • Outdoor Education

In a Montessori classroom the teacher is constantly on the move, overseeing, advising and assisting as necessary. The teacher may give a lesson to a small group here, to an individual there and always with reference to the individual needs of the student in the class. Throughout these adolescent years, tolerance, cooperativeness and social awareness grow.

Senior High School (IB)

Our Senior High School program offers students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to complete their education through the internationally recognised International Baccalaureate (IB) framework. Whether following the IB Diploma Programme or the IB Careers Programme, students are supported to pursue academic excellence while also engaging in personal growth, community service, and global awareness.

With a focus on independent learning, interdisciplinary understanding, and international-mindedness, our senior students graduate with the skills, values, and confidence needed to thrive in a changing and complex world.
